LOUISVILLE, KY, Jan. 13, 2015– Five teachers at middle and high schools from around the country were selected as recipients of the Lead2Feed Leadership Awards and awarded $5,000 in technology products for their classrooms. The teachers and their classrooms are participants in Lead2Feed, a unique service-learning program that engages students in solving local hunger issues while building valuable skills like leadership and teamwork. Lead2Feed is a Common Core-aligned program developed by the USA TODAY Charitable Foundation, with support from the Lift a Life Foundation, and the Yum! Brands Foundation.
The winners were randomly selected from registered teachers who completed and entered their Lead2Feed World Hunger Challenge projects by December 2014. These student-led projects, in partnership with local hunger relief organizations, range from volunteering at a food pantry to authoring a children’s book about hunger to delivering care packages to families in need. Another drawing for $5,000 in technology products will be held in March. The technology grants are underwritten by the Yum! Brands Foundation and will be used to obtain tablets and computers which will aid educators and students in their efforts to make meaningful change in their communities.
The winning schools include:
- Eisenhower High School – Lawton, Oklahoma
- First Colonial High School – Virginia Beach, Virginia
- Harlan County High School Gifted Leadership Program – Harlan, Kentucky
- McDowell Intermediate High School – Erie, Pennsylvania
- The Baylor School – Chattanooga, Tennessee
Since 2012, nearly half a million middle and high school students at more than 2,500 schools and clubs have participated in the Lead2Feed World Hunger Leadership Challenge. Schools that complete hunger relief projects through the Program are eligible to win over $250,000 in prize money for their charitable partners.
The Program incorporates the Lead2Feed curriculum and the leadership principles from the book, TAKING PEOPLE WITH YOU: The Only Way to Make BIG Things Happen, by David Novak, Yum! Brands’ Executive Chairman, which teaches that you’ll never make big things happen until you get people on your side.
“Lead2Feed provides educators with a turnkey service-learning experience for students that teaches collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity,” said Diane Barrett, president of the USA TODAY Charitable Foundation. “We are thrilled to award these participating schools with $5,000 in technology products to enrich the classroom experience and encourage their involvement in fighting hunger across the country.”
