This week we have a guest blog post from Marilyn Janisch, Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.
Prior to our participation at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the students at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences contributed over 4,000 cans during the canned food drive. After that, the students also fundraised money in order to manufacture meal packets to send across the state of Illinois to impoverished families and food kitchens. This event is known as “Operation Feed 6.” In past years, the students have sent these meals to other states as well as other countries in need. While at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, we were really able to see the second stage of our donations. A committed donator myself, I never really thought about the next step. The other students in this school that participated in this activity expressed the same feelings. It was really interesting to see the warehouse and acknowledge the amount of work that it takes to help others. Though there were strict rules at this organization, they were very much appreciated. It showed that our help, as well as others, was really being taken seriously. We could tell how efficient GCFD operates, and made us be able to really feel their sincerity in their mission. I, as well as my fellow pupils, truly enjoyed our experience while at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and will, without a doubt, be visiting there again.
