This week we have a team update from Sandy Shevack from Passaic Lincoln Middle School, New Jersey.
The students at Passaic Middle School met with Nobel Peace Prize laureates Rigoberta Menchu Tum and Jody Williams in Passaic, New Jersey. They were challenged to become active in solving global problems such as hunger and poverty. The Lead2Feed/World Hunger Leadership Challenge is our vehicle for our efforts! Since this is a global challenge, we are fund raising for two non-profit organizations – Passaic Mental Health in our community and Sagrada Tierra (Sacred Earth) in Poptun, Guatemala. Passaic Mental Health provides human services for families and children. Part of the focus of their after school program is healthy bodies and health minds. Many people are aware of the physical damages of hunger, but there is not a lot of awareness around the negative mental impact that hunger has. We want to educate people on these issues. Our work for Sagrada Tierra (Scared Earth) is to help rainfall water install water collection tanks to increase crop and livestock production during the six month dry season. For our projects, we constructed a bulletin board in our 8th grade cafeteria concerning hunger and solutions. It is located upon on our school’s main entrance hallway. Thanks to Lead4Change for this opportunity to increase awareness and activism amongst young people.
Thanks again for sharing your team’s update with us!
