This week we have a team update from Cindy Bowen from Carwise Middle School.
The F.E.A.S.T team is a group of 7th and 8th grade students at Carwise Middle School. Working with their Health teacher, they decorated six boxes (one for each period of students the teacher has) with the theme: F.E.A.S.T. Your Eyes on the Faces of Hunger in our Community. The message they want to get across to the other students is that the “faces” are a variety of ages, races, ethnic origins, economic/education levels, and addresses. Our school is a mid/upper middle class school that went from single digit free and reduced lunch percentages during the first 18 years of our history to having a double digit (as high as 31%) free and reduced lunch percentage in the past two years. As my service learning students learned more about our local food pantry statistics from letters we were receiving from them and in person when we took our semester field trip to visit to have a hands on tour, they became more aware of the need to help those “faces of hunger”. So the drive is starting Monday through Friday since we are off for spring break the following week returning April 1st. After we collect for one week the students are going to reevaluate what the collection week was like having announcements on our morning Carwise Cable Network show and a video still being made.
Thanks again for sharing your team’s update with us!
