Extra Q&A from the Live Chat
Q: How do you get the parents support?
A: Sharing Lead4Change program within your PTA’s, parent newsletters and community newspapers will create awareness around this leadership, service learning program. Community involvement in student team projects also creates an opportunity for parents, and school leaders to become involved with student leaders and helping for the greater good in their neighborhoods and beyond in hunger initiatives.
Q: How do we help the youth find a worthy cause outside their community while continuing to support their local community?
A: Students can select a hunger organization (Public 501c3) locally or globally. They choose by conducting research for best options and organizations. Student can also check out the link on Lead4Change website to assist in their selection: https://trust.guidestar.org/tips-for-choosing-a-charity-a-donors-10-step-guide-for-giving-wisely
Q: As a second year participant and first year $10,000 award winner our students would like to know what positive impact (data) did the 2013 World Hunger Challenge award have on those charities who serve those who are hunger?
A: Here is an example of a $10,000 award winner and the difference the donation made to Sarah’s Kitchen in Ft. Pierce, Florida:
- Opened our fifth feeding site serving 250 meals a week on Tuesdays.
- Last year we averaged 450 children a month. This year we are now serving over 800 children each month.
- Last year we served 42,000 hot nutritious meals this year we will surpass 50,000 and probably come close to 60,000.
- Your grant has helped us buy the food and supplies we need to feed these increasing numbers.
Q: How much class time is needed to devote to the program?
A: There are 10 teacher and student leadership lessons. Each lesson is approximately a 45 minute class period timeframe. We suggest 1 lesson per week to fully benefit from the leadership and service-learning program.
Q: How do I motivate more of my students to participate in the program?
A: Students are driven to help a cause. Hunger impacts 1 out of 5 children in the USA. Researching the hunger needs within your community, visiting a local food bank or having a person from this organization come to your school and address the needs they have will definitely motivate your students into ACTION!
Q: What online tools do you use to help with project management. With this project, our class found podio.com. Is there a favorite of yours?
A: The Lead4Change Student and teacher lessons will guide students through the project. The lessons are built to help teachers be a “Guide on the Side” and have the student take action on the project. Although we are not familiar with the project management tool mentioned, any resources that help organize and assist in project management is an option and a personal preference.
Q: With the focus on STEM, are we not better off including the Arts and moving forward with STEAM?
A: We have many Ag Science, Science teachers, technology teachers who are registered and participating in Lead4Change. As a matter of fact, last year’s winning classroom was from a Science Teacher! Incorporating Arts into the STEM area is effective in many schools across the USA. Our experience is educators embrace Lead4Change in a variety of core subject areas – STEM or STEAM – Lead4Change works well across the curriculum!
Q: Having participated in Lead4Change last year, I am here to shout out the success of this program. Charles from last year just asked me if he could contact the White House about this program. Is that okay with you, David?
A: Good for Charles! And we do not oppose to spreading the word about Lead2Feed! Go for it!
