How many students were asked to write resolutions or goals for 2018? Were those goals followed with an action plan – a detailed action plan – describing the process needed to accomplish the goals?
Goals are fairly easy to write, however in order to accomplish anything, a clear vision and timeline need to be established. This process needs instruction and application at an early age.
Lead4Change Lesson Six (Lesson 3 of the 6-track) has students working through stages of Vision, Structure and Culture followed with summarizing the team vision with Milestone 2.
High School teacher (and DECA Advisor), Anna Fowler in Colorado states Lesson 6 was the “Most powerful and influential not only as a group but as a class.” Fowler also comments how Lesson questions help students better organize the project and open new doors to better ideas and new opportunities.
Watch the Lesson 6 lead-in video, then work the lesson activities which emphasize the three steps to accomplish goals:
- Create a vision: Great leaders create a vision of the future.
FACS teacher in Savannah, MO, Tonya Young states, “We looked at what positive changes would happen with our event, and the after-effects, and incorporated these into our goals.” - Create an action plan: Structure to get your task finished.
Patricia DiGioia-Laird HS teacher and FCCLA advisor in Edison, NJ states their team visualized their “big goal of collecting 1000 cans and $200, into smaller goals to work toward. We were able to develop on our action plan” (17 steps!). - Create a culture that makes people feel supported: Ask, “What do you think?”
Middle School Teacher, Lisa Chandler (VA), commented, “Overall, the Vision and Action plan made the main process of the service project easier and made obtaining our goals more effective.” Ms. DiGioia-Laird also states how, “it helped each task team to plan the event they were organizing then set small wins for ourselves, and reflect on the possible benefits that this drive would have on our chapter, school and community.”
Following these three steps helps students work together to bring their plan to life and accomplish BIG goals.
What are your goals? What do you think about the process?
