Life is full of challenges and obstacles!
Teaching students the art of resilience and how to overcome obstacles is a tough job. Often students do not like the available options for overcoming an obstacle, which can cause resistance. Lesson 9 embraces this challenge with strategies for exploring ways to overcome barriers through careful planning and reflection.
“If it was easy, you would miss the joy of doing it” reflects teacher Terri King as she describes Lesson 9: Understand and Overcome the Barriers to Success. (Identical to Lesson 5 in the 6-track plan)
As educators, we know the challenges faced when changing the mindset of a student to:
It can’t can be done.
In the Lesson 9 introductory video, David Novak is transparent with his passion for encountering barriers and demonstrates ways to bring people together. Equally important, is to celebrate team successes. Success is not a single number, but a collection of numbers that add up to achieving a Big Goal.
Sharing her methods how to teach students to persevere and overcoming obstacles is middle school teacher, Terri King in Odessa, WA. In this quote from Lesson 9, Terri reminds us that anything worthwhile is never easy,‘once something is begun it needs to be finished.’
“Walk the talk and celebrate progress. Have fun and inspire others.”
David Novak shares his enthusiasm for ‘Giving recognition’ by giving employees rubber chickens, or wind-up teeth (just to name a few).
How will your student teams celebrate the success of overcoming obstacles, no matter how large or small? Record your outcomes and barriers on Milestone 3, and share your badge! Celebrate!
Over the past several months, we hope you have enjoyed these lesson snapshots and were able to enhance your Lead4Change lessons.
The March 13 issue will highlight Lesson 10 (identical to 6-track lesson 6).
With the final theme of “Bringing forth celebration and forward thinking’ we look forward to celebrating with you in this year’s 2018 Lead4Change Challenge.
