This time of year, there is an urgency to bringing the homeless inside and providing shelter. Many Lead4Change teams have focused on the needs of the homeless in their Challenge projects. Here are just a few examples:
In Bagdad, AZ, the FCCLA team joined with the SkillsUSA chapter to design, build and deliver a tiny house to the Homeless Shelter in Prescott, Arizona. They applied for and earned a $1500 grant from SkillsUSA. Then, they researched how to build a tiny home on wheels. After successfully completing the project they were challenged with the 1 hour drive to deliver their tiny home. The home stands today as a place for additional sleeping quarters for those in need. The Lead4Change team called themselves “Cottage Crafters” and exceeded what they thought possible by working together.
In Louisville, KY, the Seneca Redhawk Rangers found a different need. They learned that the dental needs of the homeless was a big issue in Auxier, KY. The Lead4Change team reached out to dental providers in the area, as well as stores and residents. Together they provided small dental packets to those in need. The packets had toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and a certificate for dental services at a local provider. Providing solutions for basic human needs is rewarding and deeply appreciated.
In Fallon, NV, the “Feet and Seat” team collected new undergarments and socks to donate to their local shelter. Again, the basic need they met helps restore dignity to a person in need and gives them something new and needed to call their own.
These are just a few of the many projects we see each year when teams focus on the needs of the homeless in their area. By talking to their shelter leaders and other community leaders, these Lead4Change teams got to the true need and created projects that were simple yet innovative.
