CHESAPEAKE – Grassfield High School has won $10,000 in charitable grants because of its efforts to fight hunger.
The school held several events during the year to increase hunger awareness and benefit the Foodbank of Southeast Virginia and the Eastern Shore, according to a news release from Lead2Feed, a program that aims to provide student engagement opportunities.
The Lead2Feed Challenge encourages students to partner with nonprofit organizations to help reduce hunger and address other community needs.
Students at Menchville High in Newport News won a $25,000 prize for their nonprofit of choice and $10,000 in technology products for the school, the release said. Students helped collect nearly 6,600 canned items and $1,000 in donations for the Peninsula Food Bank, as well as 10,000 meals and $3,000 for Stop Hunger Now.
